Pittsburgh Steelers beat writers offered differing views on whether Will Howard will secure the backup quarterback job behind Aaron Rodgers this season.
Ray Fittipaldo of the Post-Gazette said the backup role entering training camp is Howard's to lose. He noted that Howard worked with the first team during the offseason and will likely receive the second-team reps early in camp.
Mark Kaboly of 93.7 The Fan disagreed. He stated that Mason Rudolph is the expected backup and that Howard would need an outstanding preseason to force the team to keep four quarterbacks.
The Steelers signed Rodgers as their starter for a second season after winning the AFC North in 2025. Rookie Drew Allar is expected to spend the year learning behind Rodgers and first-year head coach Mike McCarthy.
Howard received positive reviews after spring practices and did not play last preseason due to a broken finger. Rudolph holds an 8-5-1 record as a Steelers starter.
