A Chinese think tank affiliated with the Ministry of Natural Resources released a report stating that the Philippines' claims to certain South China Sea features lack historical and legal basis.

The report was issued by the China Institute for Marine Affairs on July 8.
It argued that Manila’s attempt to extend its territory to those maritime features was devoid of historical and legal foundation.
A comprehensive analysis of credible historical sources and generally recognised rules of international law showed that Manila had no sovereignty over Scarborough Shoal or any of the islands and reefs in the Spratlys, the document stated.
This marks the think tank’s third report within days.
