The Bihar government announced on July 27, 2026, that no punitive action would be taken against individuals in protests before 6 p.m. on July 26. All FIRs will be withdrawn and those detained will be released.
The Bihar Home Department issued a statement late in the evening stating that no punitive or retaliatory legal action would be taken against any individual participating in protests before 6 p.m. on July 26, 2026.
The government also said the legal process for withdrawal of all FIRs, criminal complaints and show-cause notices registered before 6 p.m. on July 26 would begin immediately. All persons arrested or detained in connection with the cases would be released immediately.
The decision brought relief to hundreds of students and their families whose futures were threatened by the cases. Tejashwi Yadav had given an ultimatum until midnight on July 27 after which the announcement was made.
