Bill Callahan, known for his introspective songwriting, has unveiled 'Stepping Out for Air,' the lead single from his forthcoming album My Days of 58. Scheduled for release on February 27th through Drag City, the album will be available in formats including 2xLP, CD, cassette, and digital. The single showcases Callahan's deep baritone voice paired with a laid-back horn section, which he describes as evoking 'someone on the couch playing' rather than a formal orchestration.
The song's origins trace back more than 15 years, when it was conceived for a collaborative project with drummer Jim White and composer Warren Ellis. Logistical challenges prevented the collaboration from coming to fruition, but Callahan held onto the track, refining it over time until it fit perfectly into My Days of 58. Reflecting on the process, he said, 'I held on to the song… I like this song. It feels good.'
Callahan characterizes the album's overall tone as having a 'living room vibe,' emphasizing personal and relaxed songs that suit intimate settings. To celebrate the release, he has planned a series of in-store performances in the UK:
- February 23rd: Stranger Than Paradise Records, London at 6:30 PM and 8 PM
- February 24th: Resident Music, Brighton at 7 PM
- February 25th: Drift Records, Totnes at 7 PM
- February 26th: Rough Trade, Liverpool at 8 PM
- February 27th: Monorail, Glasgow at 7:30 PM
Fans can pre-order the album in advance. This release continues Callahan's tradition of delivering unmistakably personal music.
