Borno government denies N4 billion railway project claims

The Borno State Government has denied allegations that N4 billion was spent on a failed railway project in Maiduguri metropolis and Jere Local Government Area during the 2025 fiscal year.

The clarification came in a press statement issued on Monday by Prof. Usman A. Tar, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security. The statement followed internal reviews with the Ministry of Budget and Ministry of Transport and Energy.

The government said no rail construction project was awarded, funded or executed in 2025. It added that no Executive Council approval was sought, no budget clearance requested, no contract awarded and no funds released for any such project.

An entry in the 2025 Budget Implementation Report showing 100 percent completion was described as an administrative error. Steps are being taken to correct the records and prevent future lapses, the statement said.
