A nine-story building under construction collapsed early Sunday in Angeles City, killing a Malaysian man and leaving around 23 people missing as rescuers searched the rubble.
The collapse occurred around 3 a.m. on May 24 along Teodoro Street in Barangay Balibago. It damaged a neighboring apartelle and trapped workers and guests beneath concrete and steel.
Rescuers pulled 24 to 26 people from the debris by Sunday afternoon. A 65-year-old Malaysian tourist, Mohd Rezal bin Abdullah from Sabah, was found dead after communicating with responders by phone while pinned under rubble.
Two workers remained conscious but trapped under the building as night fell. City officials activated a unified command system and requested heavy equipment from national agencies to continue the search.
The cause of the collapse is under investigation, with authorities examining construction procedures and materials used at the site.
