Chinese teen carries bricks to fund university tuition

A Chinese high school graduate has chosen to work with her mother at a construction site to earn university tuition fees after sitting the Gaokao in June.

The girl, nicknamed Yuanyuan, is from Qidong County in Hunan Province. Her mother, Wei Yungui, is a single parent who has worked as a labourer at construction sites in Guangdong Province for the past 16 years.

Yuanyuan joined her mother carrying dozens of bricks on their backs to higher floors. A viral video captured them sweating profusely during the task.

Wei Yungui said working together helped her daughter deeply understand the daily struggles she had previously only seen from afar.

The report by Xiaoxiang Morning Herald described Yuanyuan's site work since late June following the exam.
