Chosen non-mixed spaces multiply in France amid insecurity

As women-only spaces multiply in France, a petition for dedicated train cars in suburban lines has gathered over 31,000 signatures. Launched after an attempted rape on the RER C, it highlights insecurity in public transport. These non-mixed spaces have emerged since #MeToo for protection and comfort reasons.

In France, 'chosen non-mixed' spaces are developing rapidly, particularly in gyms, pools, and discotheques. This trend is driven by fear of sexual assaults, intrusive gazes, or simply the desire to have fun without men, as one user puts it: 'because we don't need men to have fun'.

The phenomenon has gained momentum since the #MeToo movement, affecting various sectors including travel. A striking example is the petition launched on October 24, following an attempted rape on the RER C line. Started by Marie K., an 'ordinary woman' living in Île-de-France, it demands dedicated cars for women on suburban trains.

With over 31,000 signatories, the petition states: 'This is a cry for help, not a solution.' Although no women-only cars are planned, this initiative has drawn attention to ongoing insecurity in public transport. The author emphasizes: 'We don't want to be separated; we want to be protected!'.

This rise of non-mixity reflects broader concerns about women's safety in public spaces, without addressing the underlying issues.
