The Chicago Cubs have selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz from Triple-A Iowa. The move comes after the 37-year-old was released by the Los Angeles Angels earlier this month.
Pomeranz made an immediate appearance in Friday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. He retired all three batters he faced in a scoreless ninth inning during the Cubs' 17-1 loss.
The veteran had previously enjoyed success with the Cubs last season after joining from the Seattle Mariners in late April. He posted a 2.17 ERA over 57 games and contributed to the team's run to the National League Division Series.
This year with the Angels, Pomeranz struggled with a 5.01 ERA in 25 appearances before being designated for assignment on June 15. The Cubs signed him to a minor league deal following his release.
Manager Craig Counsell and president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer cited Pomeranz's familiarity with the organization and his competitive nature as reasons for the opportunity. The team optioned left-hander Jordan Wicks to Triple-A to make room on the roster.
