Detectives in Nyeri under the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested five suspects believed to be members of a gang behind motor vehicle and livestock thefts in Kirinyaga, Nyeri and Murang’a counties.
The operation began after a vehicle was reported stolen at Kiaruhiu Police Station. Investigators traced the vehicle and arrested the gang’s ringleader while he planned to sell it.
During questioning the suspect led officers to the vehicle which had fake number plates. Police then intercepted a getaway vehicle carrying four accomplices and recovered ten sisal ropes a panga two knives a club and a master key.
The gang also slaughtered livestock on the night of the theft and sold the meat through illegal channels. The suspects remain in custody pending arraignment and further investigations continue into the group’s links to other cases including one at Kerugoya Law Courts.
