A mineworker has died after being struck by an underground locomotive at Impala Platinum’s 10 Shaft in Rustenburg, bringing the death toll at the mine to five this year. Investigations into the incident are underway.
The accident occurred earlier this week at the Impala Platinum operation in the North West province. The worker sustained fatal injuries after coming into contact with the locomotive.
Johan Theron, Impala Platinum spokesperson, stated that the exact cause remains under investigation. “At this stage, the exact cause of the accident is still being investigated. There’s no eyewitness. At this stage, preliminarily, it looks like the employee somehow was injured by one of the underground locomotives,” he said.
The company has informed the worker’s family and is working with the relevant department and union to provide support during the probe.
