Equestrian Canada launches eventing venue development fund

Equestrian Canada's Eventing High Performance Advisory Group has introduced the Eventing Venue Development Fund to bolster eventing facilities nationwide. The initiative aims to upgrade venues to international standards, enhancing athlete performance and spectator experiences. Grants ranging from $500 to $100,000 will support various improvements across Canadian sites.

Equestrian Canada, in collaboration with the Eventing High Performance Advisory Group, announced the launch of the Eventing Venue Development Fund on January 24, 2026. This fund targets the development and enhancement of eventing venues throughout the country, covering both FEI-sanctioned competitions and national events. The primary objectives include elevating facilities to meet global standards, boosting Canadian athletes' competitiveness internationally, delivering engaging experiences for spectators, and fostering the sport's expansion within Canada.

Emily Gilbert, chair of the Eventing HPAG, emphasized the importance of the initiative: “We’re launching the Eventing Venue Development Fund to recognize and support the commitment our venues make year after year to the sustainability and continued progress of Eventing in Canada. Their dedication forms the backbone of our sport, and we’re inviting communities across the country to rally behind this initiative so we can strengthen, grow and protect these essential competition venues for years to come.”

The fund will provide grants between $500 and $100,000, depending on project scope and available resources. Eligible venues must be recognized Canadian eventing sites that host or plan to host EC-sanctioned events, submit detailed project plans aligned with FEI or national standards, complete work within reasonable timelines, and maintain good standing with Equestrian Canada.

Supported upgrades encompass facility enhancements like cross-country courses, footing, and stabling; infrastructure such as signage, VIP areas, seating, and event facilities; safety features including fence improvements and equipment installation; and environmental measures like water management, waste disposal, and energy efficiency.

Kathleen Ziegler, athlete development director at Alberta Horse Trials, welcomed the fund: “The creation of the Eventing Venue Development Fund is greatly appreciated. As equestrian sport continues to grow more expensive, it has become increasingly challenging to ensure riders across Canada are able to train and compete at home. This fund will support the updating and development of eventing sites nationwide, helping competitors work toward meeting international standards without leaving Canadian soil. By investing in both competitive standards and safety, this initiative supports our event sites and will strengthen the future of eventing in Canada.”

An example of a benefiting venue is Wesley Clover Parks in Ottawa, Ontario, which recently hosted its first FEI international competition at CCI1* and CCI2* levels, along with the Eastern Canadian Eventing Championships. Karen Sparks, founder and executive director at The Parks, noted: “Funding our Canadian eventing venues is incredibly important. To ensure sustainability and growth in this sport we need to ensure there is a funding track for the future. Hopefully the Venue Development Fund will be supported so it’s able to raise the tide for many event venues across the country.”

Initial funding of $6,000 has been secured from NTP athletes and the 2025 Across the Nation Clinic series. Applications are reviewed by the EC Eventing HPAG, with details on timelines and processes available through official channels. Donations to the tax-deductible fund are encouraged to expand its reach.
