The european union has agreed on new rules allowing member states to set up deportation centers outside the bloc.
The agreement was reached on monday between the european council, the commission and parliament lawmakers. The rules authorize centers in third countries that can serve as final destinations or transit points for people without the right to remain in the eu.
The measure received majority support. Only the government of pedro sánchez voiced clear opposition. Nicholas a. ioannides, cyprus deputy minister for migration, said the rules will speed up returns and increase expulsions.
Groups such as picum have warned of human rights risks, including detentions of up to 30 months. The spanish government has said it will not set up any such centers.
