Government investigates earlier release for voluntary deportation

The government is appointing an investigation to facilitate the deportation of convicted foreigners. They are to be encouraged to voluntarily agree to deportation in exchange for earlier conditional release.

From September 1 a new law takes effect that will lead to more convicted foreigners also being sentenced to deportation after serving their sentence. To ensure the law results in more deportations actually being carried out an investigator has now been tasked with examining whether convicted foreigners can receive earlier conditional release.

The investigation aims to allow shorter time in prison in exchange for persons returning home voluntarily, says Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M).

It is common today that those sentenced to deportation are not accepted by their home country unless they return voluntarily. The investigation is to submit its proposals on March 1 next year.
