Karl Johansson has spoken about leaving Östersunds IK after four seasons in the Hockeyallsvenskan. The 33-year-old former captain received no contract offer following the end of last season. Three months later he described the decision as unexpected yet accepted it without resentment.
Johansson returned to his hometown club in 2022 and served as captain during its first four years in the second tier. After the most recent campaign, the team chose to move on without offering him a new deal.
The player told Hockeysverige that the news hit hard because of his deep ties to the club and the city. He noted it was especially difficult not to receive any proposal to consider.
Johansson said he understands that general manager Rasmus Aro and coach Mikael Holmqvist wanted to shape the roster themselves. He added that he has moved on and holds no hard feelings toward the organization.
