Gobernación launches 16 days of activism against violence towards women

The Secretariat of Governance kicked off the 16 Days of Activism against Violence towards Women, a campaign promoted by UN Women and adopted by the Mexican government under President Claudia Sheinbaum. Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez stressed the state's commitment to ensuring a life free of violence for women and girls. Legal advances and a new national plan to combat harassment and abuse were highlighted.

The inaugural event took place at the Secretariat of Governance, where Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez stated that these 16 days represent a permanent call from the Mexican State to ensure all women and girls a life free of violence, under a perspective of justice, human rights, and humanism. Rodríguez highlighted that the current government has placed women's rights at the center of the public agenda, consolidating equality as a guiding principle.

Among the structural achievements mentioned are the constitutional elevation of the right to a life free of violence, equal pay, and parity in political participation. The secretary endorsed the integral plan presented by President Claudia Sheinbaum, aimed at eradicating harassment, abuse, and all forms of violence against women. This national strategy seeks to change behaviors, strengthen reporting, promote respect, and establish a culture of zero impunity.

Rodríguez acknowledged the efforts of various groups, including women human rights defenders, searching mothers, community leaders, indigenous women, migrants, producers, workers, those with disabilities, Afro-Mexicans, and elderly women. She insisted that public policies must address these needs through budgetary justice, political will, and concrete actions. The 16 Days of Activism go beyond a symbolic act, demanding a permanent work journey with institutional co-responsibility.

Key attendees included subsecretary Ingrid Gómez from the Secretariat of Women, general secretary Gabriela Rodríguez from the National Population Council, and president Claudia Oliva Morales from the National Council to Prevent Discrimination, along with other authorities in human rights and migration.
