A Republican Party official in New Mexico has been arrested and charged in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash that killed a cyclist.
Kimberly Skaggs, 54, the former treasurer of the Republican Party of New Mexico, faces one count each of leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence. The charges stem from a crash late Monday afternoon on North Fairacres Road in Las Cruces.
The victim, 40-year-old Andrew Brown, was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a northbound vehicle. Deputies arrived at the scene around 2:46 p.m., and Brown identified himself to law enforcement before he died.
A witness photographed a black Cadillac Escalade leaving the area and provided details that helped identify the vehicle. Investigators later found the SUV at Skaggs' home with front bumper damage, blood splatter, and a bicycle tread pattern.
Skaggs was arrested on Wednesday afternoon after turning herself in. Her attorney stated that she is innocent. The Republican Party of New Mexico said she is no longer affiliated with the organization.
