Government ready to extend retirement reform suspension to long careers

The French government will table an amendment to include long careers in the suspension of the retirement reform, responding to left-wing demands. This measure will be debated in the National Assembly on Wednesday. The adoption of the PLFSS revenue section on Saturday allows the debates to continue.

On Saturday, November 8, 2025, the National Assembly adopted by 176 votes against 161 and 58 abstentions the section on revenues of the social security financing bill (PLFSS) for 2026. This narrow vote allows deputies to continue examining the text, with the key article on the suspension of the retirement reform in sight, a major concession by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to avoid censure from the Parti Socialiste (PS).

This suspension, which modifies the calendar for delaying the age of eligibility for a pension, is set to be examined on Wednesday, November 12, after a 48-hour interruption for the 11-November commemorations. In committee, it was approved on October 31 by a majority of votes cast. However, the outcome in session remains uncertain, and it is not guaranteed that the entire PLFSS will be debated by Wednesday evening. If not, the government will transmit to the Senate the version including all adopted amendments.

On Monday, government spokesperson Maud Bregeon announced on BFM-TV that an amendment will be tabled by Wednesday to extend the suspension to long careers, as demanded by ecologists and communists. At this stage, the suspension only concerns the general regime, a condition set by the PS to avoid censuring the government. The amendment will detail the affected groups, and Parliament will decide.

Last week, the Minister of Labor, Jean-Pierre Farandou, stated that Matignon was 'open to widening the scope of people concerned,' particularly for long careers. Adoption will largely depend on abstentions. Ms. Bregeon warned the oppositions: 'Taxes and duties cannot be the answer to everything, all the time.' She is ready for alternative measures to the increase in medical franchises, financed by savings and not by new taxes.
