Chile's Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its support on Monday for Valparaíso as the site of the BBNJ Agreement Executive Secretariat. The campaign to secure backing will run until December 2026.
Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna said the effort is a state policy. “We will carry out all the necessary steps to secure the required support,” he stated.
The choice of headquarters will be made at the First Conference of the Parties in January 2027. Regional officials, including Presidential Delegate Manuel Millones, underlined the interest in hosting the body.
Valparaíso government spokeswoman Rosario Pérez welcomed the bid as a chance to position the city in international science and cooperation.
