India's women's table tennis team defeated Australia 3-2 on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships at the Thyagaraja Sports Complex.
India had earlier beaten Sri Lanka 3-0 in the afternoon session. The evening match against Australia proved tougher as Yangzi Liu won two singles rubbers for the visitors. Sutirtha Mukherjee secured a decisive five-game victory over Constantina Psihogios while Yashaswini Ghorpade won the deciding rubber against Min Hyung Jee.
India's men also defeated Australia in their tie. Manav Thakkar completed his singles win despite an injury sustained during the match.
G. Sathiyan withdrew from the men's singles event citing his schedule but confirmed he will play doubles events as preparation for the Asian Games.
