Indonesia U-22's chances of reaching SEA Games 2025 semifinals grow slimmer

Indonesia's U-22 team lost 0-1 to the Philippines in their Group C match at the 2025 SEA Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on December 8, 2025. This defeat has left their position precarious, with advancement depending on a win against Myanmar and outcomes in other matches. If Vietnam and Malaysia draw on December 11, Indonesia could be eliminated before facing Myanmar.

Indonesia's U-22 national team suffered a surprising 0-1 defeat to the Philippines in their opening Group C match in the men's football event at the 2025 SEA Games. The game took place at the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Monday, December 8, 2025. The lone goal was scored by Otu Banatao from a throw-in by Gabriel Guimares in first-half injury time, which the Indonesian defense failed to anticipate.

Coach Indra Sjafri expressed his disappointment with the team's performance. "This is not a good result for us. Honestly, we didn't play as expected," he said. He regretted the goal from the throw-in, highlighting a failure to execute training instructions on marking. In the second half, Indonesia dominated and created chances but failed to equalize.

The loss leaves Indonesia in second place in Group C with zero points, while the Philippines lead with six points after a prior 2-0 win over Myanmar. The Philippines have now advanced to the semifinals for the first time in 34 years, since the 1991 edition.

To advance as the best runner-up, Indonesia must beat Myanmar on December 12, 2025, by at least two goals. However, their fate hinges first on the Vietnam vs. Malaysia match in Group B on December 11. A draw would see both qualify with four points, eliminating Indonesia even if they win later. Vietnam currently tops the best runners-up with three points and a +1 goal difference, followed by Timor Leste from Group A.

This situation echoes Indonesia's opening loss at the 1995 SEA Games in the same stadium, which prevented semifinal qualification. As defending gold medalists from 2023, the PSSI's target to retain the title is now at risk. Indra Sjafri remains focused: "The important thing is I still have responsibility. In the next match, we must win."
