James Nicholas carded a four-birdie 71 on Thursday morning at Shinnecock Hills to briefly hold the clubhouse lead in the 126th U.S. Open.
Nicholas, a 29-year-old Korn Ferry Tour player from Scarsdale, New York, began his round at 6:35 a.m. alongside Taylor Montgomery and Caleb Surratt. He wore Meta glasses to record behind-the-scenes footage for his YouTube channel and Instagram followers.
Fog halted play after two holes, forcing a delay until 9:05 a.m. Nicholas used the break to rest with family before returning to the course and completing his round without further issues.
The Scarsdale native reached the field through a four-way playoff at his final qualifying event after a friend spotted his ball in foliage. He credited mental coach Joe Perron for helping manage pressure during the round.
