Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday dressed as Ebenezer Scrooge to promote the upcoming Paramount film Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol.
Depp emerged from a mock 1880s British Christmas storefront in the Gaslamp district around 2:30 p.m. after fans gathered earlier in the day. He stayed in character throughout, responding to greetings with lines such as "What’s so good about it?" and "Have you no lives? No responsibilities?" before quietly saying "Humbug."
The actor later interrupted a Collider panel in Hall H while still in costume. He handed a candle to director John Francis Daley and presented the first trailer for the film directed by Ti West. The trailer features Depp as the grouchy Scrooge tormented by spirits and throwing snowballs at passersby.
Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol also stars Ian McKellen, Rupert Grint, Daisy Ridley, Andrea Riseborough and Tramell Tillman. It is scheduled for release in theaters on Nov. 13. Depp described the role as one he has been obsessed with since childhood.
