Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated on June 24 that authorities have arrested several individuals and are investigating politicians accused of mobilizing goons to disrupt planned protests on June 25.
Murkomen spoke at Harambee House, saying police intelligence showed youths were being recruited from the Nairobi area to cause chaos during the June 25 events that mark youths killed in 2024 protests.
He accused unnamed political actors of using reverse psychology to blame the government for violence, adding that a senior politician who had advised against protesting was involved in paying goons.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had warned on June 23 from his Wamunyoro residence that the state planned violence and urged a shutdown in Nairobi and other regions.
Murkomen directed officers to protect peaceful protesters and said anyone found armed would face the law. Some opposition groups adjusted plans to join the commemorations.
