Kokuho becomes highest-grossing Japanese live-action film locally

The kabuki drama 'Kokuho' has achieved a major box office milestone in Japan, surpassing the long-standing record to become the highest-grossing live-action film in its home market. Directed by Sang-il Lee, the film has earned JPY17.4 billion ($111 million) and sold over 12.3 million tickets since its June 6 opening. It also serves as Japan's submission for best international feature at the 2026 Academy Awards.

Box Office Milestone

'Kokuho,' a three-hour kabuki theater drama directed by Sang-il Lee, has made history by becoming the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film in Japan. It overtook the 22-year-old record held by 'Bayside Shakedown 2' from 2003, generating JPY17.4 billion ($111 million) in local revenue and selling more than 12.3 million tickets as of November 24. After 172 days in theaters since its June 6 premiere, the film now ranks No. 11 on Japan's all-time box office list across all genres, according to Kogyo Tsushinsha.

Plot and Production

Set in Nagasaki in 1964, 'Kokuho' follows 14-year-old Kikuo, who trains in kabuki theater after his yakuza leader father's death, alongside the son of a famous kabuki actor. The story spans decades as the characters navigate their careers from acting school to major stages. The screenplay is by Satoko Okudera, based on Shuichi Yoshida's novel, with music by Marihiko Hara. The cast includes Ryo Yoshizawa, Ryusei Yokohama, and Ken Watanabe. Produced by Aniplex Inc. in association with Myriagon Studio, Amuse Inc., Toho Co Ltd., Lawson Inc., and Credeus, the film has defied expectations and contributed to revitalizing Japan's third-largest film market.

International Prospects

As Japan's entry for best international feature at the 98th Academy Awards, 'Kokuho' has gained international attention. North American distributor GKIDS launched qualifying runs in Los Angeles on November 14 and New York on November 21, resulting in sold-out screenings and an estimated gross exceeding $60,000. Director Lee and star Yoshizawa attended Q&As in both cities. A wider U.S. theatrical release is planned for early 2026. GKIDS president Dave Jesteadt stated, 'The historic box office success in Japan demonstrates that the film is a must-see theatrical event, with many Japanese audiences returning to cinemas multiple times to experience its immersive beauty.'
