LDP sees difficulty in agreeing on Lower House seat cuts soon

Shunichi Suzuki, secretary-general of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, said on a Sunday television program that agreeing on a reduction in Lower House seats before the extraordinary Diet session ends on December 17 is difficult. The LDP and Japan Innovation Party signed a coalition agreement last month to submit and pass legislation cutting Diet seats by 10% during this session.

On November 9, 2025, Shunichi Suzuki, secretary-general of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), said in a television program recorded on Thursday that it is difficult for all parties to agree on reducing Lower House seats during the ongoing extraordinary Diet session ending December 17. "It will not be easy to complete discussions to gain understanding of all parties and factions and decide on the details before the end of the current Diet session," Suzuki stated.

The coalition agreement between the LDP and the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), signed last month, aims to submit and pass legislation to cut the number of Diet members by 10% in this session. However, Suzuki stressed the need for broad-based support to reduce Lower House seats. Noting that national census results will be released next year, he added, "We have to work to deepen understanding (based on the census results)."

This statement highlights challenges in negotiating with opposition parties amid efforts to reform the electoral system, which has sparked political debate.
