LeBron James ended his eight-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers on the first day of NBA free agency. In a separate blockbuster deal, Kawhi Leonard was traded to the Toronto Raptors from the Los Angeles Clippers.
James informed the Lakers he would not re-sign ahead of free agency opening on June 30. He posted on social media that it was an honor to wear the purple and gold while trying to continue the greatness and legacies that came before him.
His agent Rich Paul said LeBron knows the Lakers are building for the future and wants to compete for championships. Possible destinations mentioned include the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Raptors acquired Leonard in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and control of their 2031 and 2033 first-round picks. The move gives Toronto two All-NBA caliber wings alongside Scottie Barnes.
The Miami Heat landed Giannis Antetokounmpo in a separate trade that included several first-round picks and Bobby Portis. They later signed Tim Hardaway Jr. to a one-year deal.
