Lorry accident causes heavy traffic on Nakuru-Eldoret highway

A lorry was involved in a single-vehicle accident at Sachangwan on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway this afternoon, Saturday April 25, 2026, blocking both lanes. The incident has led to long queues of vehicles on both sides and delays for travellers between the Rift Valley and Western Kenya. Police have issued diversion routes as clearance operations continue.

The accident occurred this afternoon on the busy stretch of the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, where a loaded lorry blocked both lanes completely. The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that recovery teams are working to remove the vehicle as quickly as possible to restore normal traffic flow.

"Meanwhile, efforts are currently ongoing to quickly remove the obstructing loaded lorry," a police traffic dispatcher confirmed. Officers have been deployed to the scene to direct motorists, enforce lane discipline, and urge caution.

Motorists heading along the Kericho-Kisumu route have been diverted to the Njoro-Molo-Nakuru road. Those travelling from Nakuru towards Eldoret are redirected via the Nakuru-Eldama Ravine-Eldoret road. NPS has asked drivers to remain patient and cooperate with on-ground officers.

The incident follows a day after Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) temporarily closed a section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass due to a crash involving two trucks at Gitaru, where a broken-down lorry was rear-ended, likely due to brake failure. That road reopened Friday evening.
