John Early's Maddie's Secret grossed $58,200 in its opening weekend at New York's IFC Center, marking the venue's biggest debut in more than two years.
The Magnolia Pictures release also ranked as the sixth-biggest opener ever at the arthouse theater. Multiple sold-out Q&A screenings featured moderators including John Wilson, Sarah Sherman, and Amy Sedaris, drawing younger audiences according to IFC Center SVP and GM Harris Dew.
Early, who stars as a dishwasher turned viral food content creator, attended the events and noted the personal significance of the venue. The film premiered at TIFF and played additional festivals before its New York run.
It expands to Los Angeles next week with further Q&As planned, followed by additional cities on July 3.
