Maggie Gyllenhaal was honored with the President’s Award at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival on Friday. She discussed her approach to directing and female characters during a press event the following day.
Gyllenhaal received the award at the festival’s opening night ceremony. She spoke to international press on Saturday in a suite at the neo-baroque Grand Hotel Pupp in Karlovy Vary.
She highlighted her two directorial films, “The Lost Daughter” and “The Bride,” which challenge traditional female stereotypes. Gyllenhaal said she aims to create space for authentic experiences rather than deliberately breaking taboos.
The director also confirmed she is adapting Rachel Kushner’s novel “Creation Lake” for Warner Bros. She praised studio executives Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca as supportive partners.
