Marcos urges Filipinos to face trials with faith and perseverance

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to face life's trials with faith and perseverance while striving for national unity, in his Holy Week message. He highlighted Christ's Passion as a reminder that true greatness lies in sacrifice and service. This comes as the world contends with the Mideast conflict's impacts.

In his Holy Week message, President Marcos urged Filipinos to pause for rest and reflection on Jesus Christ's sacrifice. He stated that the Passion of Christ reminds that “true greatness is not found in power, but in sacrifice; not in privilege, but in service and not in comfort, but in the courage to carry the burdens of others.”

He added, “As we reflect on His sacrifice, may we renew our commitment to love one another more deeply, serve one another more faithfully and stand firm in faith even in the face of trials.” Marcos cited Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem, suffering on the cross at Calvary, and resurrection as demonstrations of love that embraces suffering and overcomes death.

“May Jesus Christ’s example inspire us to face our own challenges with humility, perseverance and hope,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rev. Fr. Douglas Badong of St. Joseph Parish in Gagalangin, Tondo, Manila, said Palm Sunday marks welcoming Jesus into lives amid crisis. In a dzMM radio interview, he encouraged Catholics to attend Mass after palm blessings, rather than leaving immediately.

“Only Christ can save us. Only Christ can help us... this is also the beginning of what we call Holy Week,” Badong stated. Palm blessings will occur in Hermosa, Manila.

Holy Week commemorates Christ's Passion and death for humanity's redemption from sin. Over 80 percent of Filipinos are Christian, mostly Roman Catholic.
