Mercedes withdraws review request over Russell Monaco penalties

Mercedes has withdrawn its request for a review of George Russell's penalties from the Monaco Grand Prix. The team confirmed the decision on Friday morning after discussions with the FIA and Formula One Management.

The FIA announced on Thursday that Mercedes had dropped its Right of Review submission. The team stated that pursuing the request would not lead to a positive outcome for the squad or the series.

Mercedes sought the review after Alpine successfully challenged penalties given to Pierre Gasly for pitlane speeding. An admission from Formula One Management that timing measurements were incorrect led to Gasly's third place being reinstated.

Russell had also received a pitlane speeding penalty during the race and later a drive-through for an infringement while serving it. This dropped him outside the top 10. Team principal Toto Wolff noted limited prospects for overturning the result.

Red Bull and McLaren have filed separate protests against the Monaco results. These will be handled by the FIA's International Court of Appeal.

Following Charles Leclerc's 20-second penalty drop to eighth at the 2026 F1 Miami GP (see earlier coverage), Max Verstappen and George Russell have also been summoned to FIA stewards over potential infractions from the race's chaotic finale. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli won ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris, with Oscar Piastri third.

Toto Wolff has defended Kimi Antonelli's radio complaints after the Mercedes driver clashed with teammate George Russell during the Formula 1 sprint in Canada. The incident occurred on lap six as Antonelli attempted an outside pass for the lead.
