A 27-year-old Mississippi man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison for fatally shooting his father during an argument in 2022.
Jeffrey Young Jr. entered the plea on Friday in 9th District Circuit Court before Judge Toni Terrett. He received a 40-year sentence with 10 years to serve in state prison for the death of his father, Jeffrey Young Sr.
The shooting took place in July 2022 at a home on Castle Road in the Camelot Estates subdivision of Warren County, just south of Vicksburg. Authorities said a brief argument over car speakers preceded the incident, during which Young Jr. shot his father multiple times in the front yard.
Court testimony described a history of alleged abuse by the victim, including claims from family members and witnesses about alcohol-fueled violence. Prosecutors noted that the father had his back turned and posed no threat at the time of the shooting.
Young Jr. expressed remorse in court, stating that his father had pushed him too far that day. The victim's sister asked the judge to impose the maximum penalty.
