Nairobi county offers 5% discount on seasonal parking fees until February

The Nairobi County government has announced a 5% discount for motorists paying seasonal parking fees by February 14. This comes alongside incentives for property owners settling land rates early, as part of efforts to improve revenue collection.

The Nairobi County government announced on December 22 that motorists will receive a 5% discount on seasonal parking fees if paid by February 14. Seasonal parking fees are prepaid charges for parking in a designated area over a fixed period, such as a month, quarter, or year, varying by vehicle type and permit duration.

For private cars, monthly permits cost about Ksh 3,000, three-month ones Ksh 9,000, six-month Ksh 18,000, and annual up to Ksh 36,000. Larger commercial vehicles like vans, minibuses, lorries, and others pay higher rates due to their size, with monthly fees from Ksh 12,500 to Ksh 25,000.

Additionally, the county stated that property owners settling land rates early will get incentives: a 5% discount for payments between January 15 and 31, and 3% for those in February. Residents are urged to pay via *647# or the county's services portal.

Nairobi property owners had until January 9 to clear arrears and update land rates records after the waiver period ended. According to the county's receiver of revenue, Tiras Njoroge, landowners failing to update records will be deemed defaulters, facing legal action from the county.

Njoroge noted that some owners' failure to clear arrears has hampered the county's ability to deliver essential services like healthcare and waste management. “This waiver is the last soft landing. Once it ends, we will fully apply the law to recover outstanding land rates, including penalties and interest,” Njoroge cautioned.

“It is not sustainable that only about 20 per cent of landowners are paying rates. Roads, waste management, health services, and public lighting depend on this revenue. Everyone must contribute fairly,” he added.
