Scientists have described a previously unknown feathered dinosaur species from northwestern China that may explain clusters of broken bird bones at a fossil site.
The dinosaur, named Jianchangmaensis, was a Microraptor relative of Velociraptor with long feathers on its limbs that likely allowed it to glide.
Researchers found the partial arm bone at the Changma Basin site in Gansu Province. The specimen suggests a wingspan of about four feet, making it one of the larger known microraptors.
"This new Microraptor dinosaur, Jianchangmaensis, is our best guess," said Jingmai O'Connor of the Field Museum. She noted it was the only non-bird carnivore recovered from the location.
The study, published in the Annals of Carnegie Museum, adds context to the ancient ecosystem where early birds lived alongside other dinosaurs.
