Intel engineers have developed a protocol and matching Linux driver to allow fast data movement between computers over USB4 or Thunderbolt cables without any networking setup.
Mika Westerberg, Intel's Thunderbolt maintainer, and engineer Alan Borzeszkowski created the USB4STREAM protocol along with the thunderbolt_stream driver. The system provides each host with a character device at /dev/tbstreamX that functions like a regular file for standard read and write operations.
