Nitin Nabin was elected as the 12th national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unopposed, with the official announcement scheduled for Tuesday in New Delhi between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. The 45-year-old Nabin, son of the late senior BJP leader and four-time Bihar legislator Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, entered politics in 2006 after winning a by-election from Patna West following his father's death. He will be the youngest person to hold the key post.
The election followed the party's constitutional process, starting with a membership drive and polls for local committees, progressing to mandal, district, regional, and state levels. The national president's election occurs after organisational polls in at least half the states. National Returning Officer K Laxman stated that the process was initiated after electing presidents in 30 out of 36 states. Nabin's nomination was backed by 37 sets of papers proposed by senior leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, and others.
JP Nadda, who held the position since January 2020 with an extension until June 2024, stepped down after joining the Modi Cabinet post the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Since its formation in 1980, the BJP has never seen a contest for the national president despite constitutional provisions allowing one. When electorally weak, the RSS has played a larger role, but in power, decisions are driven by the Prime Minister and close confidants. Nabin's selection fits this pattern, signaling the party's aim to consolidate organisational control.
The Parliamentary Board finalised Nabin's appointment. The national president is entitled to two consecutive three-year terms.
