Olivia Rodrigo disclosed on The Tonight Show that multiple songs on her upcoming album draw inspiration from the Sex and the City relationship between Miranda Hobbs and Steve Brady. She described the lead single 'Drop Dead' as capturing a positive take on romantic love infused with melancholy. The album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, is set to release on June 12.
On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Olivia Rodrigo shared the creative spark behind her third studio album. She explained that the fictional romance of Miranda Hobbs and Steve Brady from Sex and the City profoundly influenced several tracks. “There’s actually multiple songs that are inspired by Miranda and Steve,” Rodrigo said. “It’s my favorite show. I think I’ve watched every single episode maybe three times.” She recalled a poignant scene where Miranda tearfully tells Steve, “Any time something funny I just want to tell you,” which prompted her to write a song about it. This marks a shift from the heartbreak themes of her previous albums, including 2023’s Guts, toward love songs blending positivity with sadness and longing. Rodrigo cited The Cure’s “Love Song” and Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” as favorites that embody this mix, calling them “so sad.” The lead single, “Drop Dead,” depicts a “really awesome first date” and serves as the “first chapter” of the album’s emotional journey, according to the singer. She will perform “Drop Dead” and another new track on Saturday Night Live this weekend, fulfilling a longtime dream of hosting and performing on the show. Rodrigo also announced an upcoming tour, expressing excitement about playing the new songs live. The full album arrives June 12.
