PRI deputy Paola Gárate questioned the National Defense Secretariat for not granting her protection despite received threats, including a funeral wreath and a gunpoint incident last October.
Gárate, a local legislator in Sinaloa, recounted that in October 2025 she was threatened with a gun to her head and that she recently received a funeral wreath at her home. The deputy stated she filed complaints from the first moment, including one at the State Prosecutor’s Office within the following 24 hours.
During a morning press conference on June 16, Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla Trejo explained that Gárate was advised to file a complaint so the National Guard could conduct a risk analysis. Trevilla noted contact has been maintained with the legislator and that requests directed to the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection are evaluated.
Gárate responded that authorities do not have complete information and questioned the criteria for granting protection. “What more is needed for a citizen to receive protection?”, she declared on social media. The deputy also mentioned having been abducted in 2021 during an electoral process.
