Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a torn sagittal band in his left ring finger. The 20-year-old is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks. He suffered the injury during Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals.
Griffin was hurt on a diving attempt at a single up the middle in the third inning. He initially told reporters the finger felt fine but imaging later confirmed the tear.
The team opted for non-operative care. Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said the plan calls for six weeks of splint and immobilization.
Manager Don Kelly called the injury a punch in the gut. Griffin had already missed about a month earlier this season with a right forearm strain.
Jack Brannigan will be activated from the taxi squad to fill Griffin's roster spot. Jared Triolo is expected to see time at shortstop.
