La France insoumise will not hold its antiracist concert Sunday evening on Place de la République in Paris. The police prefecture cancelled the event planned as part of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s presidential campaign. An appeal was filed and the administrative court must rule soon.
The “Fête de la Musique antiraciste” was to bring together about ten artists from the emerging rap scene. The event formed part of the presidential campaign launched by Jean-Luc Mélenchon at the beginning of May.
The prefecture justified the ban by the polarized political context ahead of the presidential election. Authorities judged that the concert, due to its resolutely political tone, risked triggering public order disturbances.
La France insoumise filed an appeal to annul the prefectural order. The administrative court must rule between Friday evening and Saturday morning.
