RAF brings services to remote KZN communities

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) visited Jozini in northern KwaZulu-Natal to extend its services to far-flung rural areas. Officials processed claims and inspected road repairs during the outreach. The initiative aims to improve accessibility and road safety for remote residents.

On November 7, 2025, the Road Accident Fund (RAF), in partnership with the Department of Transport, conducted an outreach in Jozini, northern KwaZulu-Natal, to address the challenges faced by residents in accessing RAF services. The visit targeted rural communities far from the fund's main offices in Durban, where travel distances often hinder claim processing.

Siphamandla Gumbi from the RAF explained the effort: “Communities are all rural communities and it’s very far for people to get to our offices in Durban. So we are trying by all means to make sure that they come to the area we reach all the communities. As you can see today up to so far we have seen about 300 people we have come to take their claims other two large claims we are also going to be doing settlements for people whose cases are being finalised two days. With an activity we are trying to do to reach as many people as possible. We are trying to make sure we meet far flung communities.”

During the roadshow in the Bhambanana community, RAF officials assisted around 300 people with claims and provided information on services. They also planned settlements for finalized cases within two days. The Deputy Minister of Transport and RAF leadership engaged locals on road safety and claimant needs, emphasizing collaborative efforts with stakeholders to enhance road infrastructure and accessibility.

Simultaneously, the Department of Transport inspected pothole repairs on provincial road P552 as part of the Operation Vala Zonke programme. This nationwide initiative focuses on fixing potholes through labour-intensive methods to improve road conditions across South Africa.

The RAF highlighted its commitment via social media, stating: “Bringing RAF services to the people! We are assisting the Bhambanana community with RAF claims and information during our roadshow today. We’re committed to being accessible, helping road users across South Africa understand their rights and access RAF services. #ICare²”

This outreach underscores ongoing efforts to make RAF benefits more reachable for underserved areas, promoting safer roads and efficient claim resolutions.
