Reader calls for removing upper age limit for mammograms

Arne Andersson urges Region Stockholm to remove the upper age limit for mammogram screenings. His wife recently received a cancer diagnosis shortly after her last routine examination. He argues that women should decide for themselves how long they wish to continue the screenings.

In a letter to the editor published in Dagens Nyheter on November 27, 2025, Arne Andersson, a relative of a woman with cancer, criticizes Region Stockholm's policy on mammograms. Andersson recounts how his wife received a cancer diagnosis after passing the upper age limit for routine screenings, which he views as a critical failure in the system.

"It is time for women themselves to decide how long they want to check for breast cancer", writes Andersson. He proposes that women should have access to regular mammogram screenings for as long as they desire, rather than being restricted by an administrative limit. Andersson stresses that it is high time for Region Stockholm to reconsider and grant women greater autonomy in health matters.

The background to the letter is personal: Andersson's wife was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after her last routine screening, highlighting the risks of age-based limitations. The letter raises questions about how screening programs are designed to better meet individual needs, especially for older women who may develop the disease later in life. Region Stockholm has not yet commented on the proposal, but the debate on age limits in cancer prevention measures has been ongoing in Sweden for several years.
