Reginateatern closes temporarily after mold issues

Reginateatern in central Uppsala is closing temporarily after work environment experts deemed the building unsafe due to moisture damage. The decision was made on Tuesday. The theater plans to move remaining performances to other venues during renovations.

The theater has faced moisture problems for some time. A mold-allergic audience member first noticed damage in the foyer last fall. Additional moisture issues came to light in recent weeks, according to theater chief Marie Östh.

“There is nothing alarming that happened just yesterday, but in the end we reach a point where you cannot have a work environment that looks like this,” Östh said. She sees no acute danger for staff or audience but notes that it is not healthy to stay in the premises.

Department head Helena Westin described the decision as heavy but necessary. Remaining performances, including the student revue Kris(t)en i befolkningsfrågan that was to premiere on Wednesday, are being moved to other stages such as Stockholms nation. Reginateatern is expected to reopen in September after renovation.
