More than 200 families in Changamwe, Mombasa County, are facing eviction after a government notice to vacate expired three days ago. Residents claim the move violates a court order maintaining the status quo.
Over 170 housing units are set for demolition, affecting more than 800 people. Families have spent the past week in uncertainty, with some having nowhere else to go.
One resident, Evans Ajoro, said ministers in previous governments had assured them the houses were theirs. He called for relocation to completed units before any construction begins.
Lawyers for the families stated that court orders require the status quo on occupation, usage and possession to remain. Residents have been camping at Changamwe Police Station to seek clarification and are urging the government to suspend the eviction and find a humane solution.
