Rights group demands justice for six traders killed in Lagos

The National Coalition Against Mass Killings, Extra-Judicial Killings, Mob Actions and Impunity (NCAMKI) has called for accountability following the alleged killing of six traders at the Owode Onirin Spare Parts Market in Lagos by police officers from Nasarawa State. The group condemned the incident as a moral disgrace and highlighted the lack of prosecution for the implicated officers. It urged authorities to act swiftly to prevent further impunity.

In a statement signed by Interim Administrator Babatunde Agunbiade, NCAMKI described the killings as “a moral disgrace” and decried “the continued impunity” surrounding the event. The traders were reportedly shot by officers from Nasarawa State at the Owode Onirin Spare Parts Market, where they were simply trying to earn a living. According to the coalition, none of the implicated officers has been properly prosecuted, with some released without charge, leaving grieving families without justice.

The group called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Lagos governor, and the attorney-general for urgent action, stating, “The killing of citizens, who were simply seeking to make a living, is a moral disgrace to the country. That the killers roam free while grieving families cry out for justice is a crucible test for Nigeria’s democracy. We will not remain silent. We demand accountability now.”

NCAMKI outlined a six-point demand to ensure justice and curb future abuses: immediate re-arrest and prosecution of the culprits; an independent investigation; compensation for victims’ families; accountability in the police chain of command; strict judicial timelines; and broader police reforms supported by rights advocates.

The coalition expressed solidarity with the Centre for Human Rights and Justice Studies (CHRJS) and human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), who has argued that “no settlement talks can have legitimacy when blood has been shed.” It urged Nigerians, including market unions, faith leaders, and rights groups, to support the victims’ families and pressure authorities. NCAMKI also appealed to international human rights bodies and donor agencies to monitor the case, warning, “There is no immunity from justice. The time for talk has passed. The time for action is now.”
