Samsung will deactivate its Messages app for users in the United States during July. The change requires users to switch to Google Messages to keep their text history and features intact. Only emergency messaging will remain functional after the shutdown.
Samsung has notified users that the app will no longer support regular texting after the July deadline. Message history and RCS conversations will not transfer automatically, so users must complete the migration steps themselves.
The company recommends downloading Google Messages and setting it as the default SMS app. This app offers RCS features such as typing indicators, improved group chats and higher-quality image sharing, along with spam detection and multidevice access.
Users on Android 11 or lower are not affected by the deactivation but are still advised to switch. Older Galaxy Watches running Tizen will lose access to full conversation history, while newer Wear OS models will retain it.
