Second winter storm ends, but cold front 28 arrives

The second winter storm of the season will begin to lose strength this Tuesday, January 13, but cold front number 28 will maintain freezing conditions across much of Mexico in the coming days. The National Water Commission warns of frosts, rains, and strong winds in various regions. The storm will move toward Texas, ceasing to affect the country.

The National Water Commission (Conagua) reported that the second winter storm, which has caused very cold conditions in northwest, north, and northeast Mexico, will begin to weaken on Tuesday, January 13. That morning, the phenomenon will move over Coahuila, generating rains and showers, with the possibility of snow, sleet, or freezing rain in areas of Durango, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Zacatecas.

However, relief will be short-lived, as cold front number 28 will enter the national territory, interacting with a low-pressure channel in the western Gulf of Mexico and an upper-level trough. This will cause showers and heavy rains in eastern and southeastern states from Tuesday, January 13, to Thursday, January 16.

Cold front number 27 will persist in the southeast and Yucatan Peninsula, causing intense to torrential rains in Veracruz, Chiapas, and Tabasco, as well as heavy rains in Oaxaca, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo. The associated polar air mass will maintain cold temperatures in the center, east, and southeast, along with a strong "Norte" event on the Gulf of Mexico coast, the Isthmus, and the Gulf of Tehuantepec, which will decrease at night.

For the early morning of Wednesday, January 14, extreme minimum temperatures are expected: -15 to -10 °C with frosts in the mountainous areas of Durango; -10 to -5 °C in the sierras of Chihuahua; and -5 to 0 °C in the sierras of Baja California, Sonora, Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Mexico State, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca. In high areas of Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Mexico City, Morelos, and Chiapas, temperatures will range from 0 to 5 °C. The possibility of sleet persists in Coahuila, Nuevo León, Durango, and Zacatecas.

Regarding winds, the Norte event will reach gusts of 60 to 80 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, and 50 to 70 km/h in Veracruz, easing in the afternoon. Gusts of 40 to 60 km/h are forecast in the Gulf of California, the Baja Californias, and northern and central states.

Authorities recommend taking extreme precautions against intense cold, possible frosts, rains, and wind gusts, and staying alert to official Conagua advisories.
