Senators Catherine Mumma and Veronica Maina have tabled a motion in the Senate to phase out boarding schools in favor of a hybrid system.
The proposal, submitted on June 17, seeks to address recurring student unrest, arson attacks and insecurity in senior secondary schools across Kenya.
The notice states that the Ministry of Education should develop modalities for phasing out boarding schools and introducing a hybrid set-up where all schools have both day and boarding arrangements.
It also calls for mandatory annual fire safety audits, installation of emergency exits and firefighting equipment, as well as a comprehensive inquiry by the Senate Standing Committee on Education within 90 days.
