Sony files expanded copyright lawsuit against Udio

Sony Music has filed a new lawsuit against AI music company Udio, significantly increasing the number of sound recordings at issue in the ongoing copyright dispute.

The lawsuit was filed on Monday and expands the claims from 333 recordings to more than 30,000. This change raises the potential damages from $50 million to $4.5 billion.

Sony originally sued Udio in 2024 alongside Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. The other two companies later reached licensing deals with Udio and exited the case.

Sony states that the additional recordings were identified during the discovery process. A federal judge had previously denied Sony's request to add them to the original lawsuit.

Udio maintains that its use of the recordings qualifies as fair use. Sony argues that licensing deals with other companies demonstrate an existing market for such rights.
